New research shows that severe space weather events can disrupt the navigation abilities of migratory birds, leading to a decline in their population. The study used data from weather radar stations and ground-based magnetometers to analyze bird migrations over a 23-year period. The findings suggest that during severe space weather events, bird populations in the U.S. Great Plains region decreased by 9 to 17 percent.
