Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have found compelling evidence of a supermassive black hole at the heart of the Messier 83 galaxy. Webb's Mid-Infrared Instrument detected highly ionised neon gas, suggesting an active galactic nucleus previously hidden by dust.
